Determining this year's grant recipient was extremely difficult given the number of qualified grant applicants. We have decided to increase the total award amount to $300 and divide it between two much deserving programs. Congratulations to 500 Reach and Washington Alternative! Your dedication to at-risk students is admirable. 500 Reach — Kansas City, KS 500 Reach is a community learning center providing students who had previously dropped out of school to utilize computer-based course instruction to receive a high school diploma. These students, many of whom live in shelters or are homeless, work at their own pace to complete an academic curriculum that aligns with Kansas state standards. Many of them, who once struggled in a "traditional" school, now excel as a result of the support provided by 500 Reach's dedicated teachers. The NAREN grant 500 Reach receives will go towards purchasing a printer and notebooks for student use. Washington Alternative — Chattanooga, TN Students in Hamilton County, TN that have committed a "zero tolerance" offense or have a history of disruptive behavior are eligible to attend Washington Alternative. Washington serves between 200 and 300 students each year on high school and middle school levels. Each semester, Washington takes the oldest students with the fewest credits to visit the Chattanooga State campus to visit the GED center and tour the Tennessee Technology Center on campus. The Technology Center offers certificate programs, some of which do not require a high school diploma to enroll, such as welding, auto-body, construction, computer networking and others. The NAREN grant that Washington Alternative receives will go toward van rental and lunch for the 10 to 12 students they will be taking on one of these visits to Chattanooga State.
